The Chlorella sorokiniana strain UTEX 1230 genome sequence and gene models have not been determined by the JGI, but were downloaded from the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) Greenhouse portal on October 31, 2019. In order to ensure this genome is comparable to those sequenced by the JGI, we applied filters to remove if present: 1) transposable elements, 2) pseudogenes, 3) alternative transcripts and overlapping models, 4) alleles on secondary scaffolds and 5) unsupported short models. This resulted in the removal of 662 models and the generation of the FilteredModels1 (GeneCatalog) gene track. All published models are available in the ExternalModels track. Please note that this copy of the genome is not maintained by LANL and is therefore not automatically updated. In order to allow comparative analyses with other algal genomes sequenced by the JGI, a copy of this genome is incorporated into PhycoCosm. The JGI Annotation Pipeline was used to add functional annotation to this genome.

Chlorella sorokiniana strain UTEX 1230 belongs to the class of the Trebouxiophyceae within the phylum of the green algae. It had been isolated from fresh water and was originally of interest due to its high temperature tolerance. Over the decades, this strain was studied and characterized broadly in regards to its physiology. As a strain that grows fast and can accumulate neutral lipids, it was under consideration for biofuels production. It can grow with acetate or with glucose as carbon sources. Noteworthy is that heterotrophic growth with glucose induces chlorosis with concomitant major neutral lipid accumulation (Rosenberg et al., 2014). Note that the strain can be obtained from the UTEX culture collection.
