Cryptococcus terricola JCM 24523 is an oleaginous yeast strain capable of directly assimilating starch as a carbon source for the consolidated bioprocessing of hydrocarbon products. Lipid production in C. terricola JCM 24523 favors the production of unsaturated 18 carbon chain length fatty acids, with additional minor contributions of saturated 18 carbon and 16 carbon fatty acids. The high utility of these fatty acids for the production of biofuels and other high value products, in tandem with the ability of C. terricola JCM 24523 to grow using solubilized starch as a feedstock, makes it a potential candidate for use in industrial fermentation processes. The genomic sequence of C. terricola JCM 24523 provides a supplemental point of comparison in relation to other oleaginous yeasts for elucidating the genetic mechanisms underlying fatty acid synthesis profiles and the metabolic controls governing the enactment of oleaginous metabolism.
