The Cyclotella cryptica CCMP332 genome sequence and gene models have not been determined by the JGI, but were downloaded from Traller et al. at UCLA on October 31, 2019. Please note that this copy of the genome is not maintained by UCLA and is therefore not automatically updated. In order to allow comparative analyses with other algal genomes sequenced by the JGI, a copy of this genome is incorporated into PhycoCosm. The JGI Annotation Pipeline was used to add functional annotation to this genome.

Cyclotella cryptica is a marine photosynthetic diatom originally isolated from West Tisbury Great Pond, Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts USA in 1956 by R. Guillard. It was a featured species in the US Department of Energy's Aquatic Species Program as a suitable strain for large-scale production of biofuel from microalgae. The clone of C. cryptica that was chosen for genome sequencing is publicly available from Bigelow National Center for Marine Algae and Microbiota under the identifier CCMP 332. The genome of this oleaginous diatom was sequenced to identify the genetic traits that enable substantial accumulation of triacylglycerol, a precursor to biofuel.
