The asexual sporangiophores of Phycomyces blakesleeanus strain UBC1 are far shorter than those that usually reach 10-15 cm in height. Scale = 5 cm. Image provided by Alexander Idnurm.

Morphological variants of the Mucorales species Phycomyces blakesleeanus have been isolated from nature, including strain UBC1 that was isolated in Canada in 1970.  Rather than producing the long asexual sporangiophores of 10-15 cm in height, these structures are far shorter, and the strain also has a fertility defect.  The genome sequence of this variant may provide new insights into the developmental processes in the Mucorales species.
