Agaricostilbum hyphaenes (Har. & Pat.) Oberw. & Bandoni is a Pucciniomycotina (Basidiomycota) species that occurs commonly on palm litter in subtropical and tropical areas. On plant material A. hyphaenes exhibits hyphal growth, producing clusters of small white basidiocarps (up to 3mm high). Phragmobasidia of the 4-septate auricularioid type produce gasteroid basidiospores that germinate by budding. In culture only the yeast state is produced, which is non-fermenting; colonies are pale-yellowish and smooth. Although the ecology of A. hyphaenes is not known, it is almost always found on palm litter and conjectured to be mycoparasitic.

Within Pucciniomycotina, A. hyphaenes belongs to Agaricostilbomycetes (Agaricostilbales, Agaricostilbaceae).  Genomic data produced for this project will represent the first available for a member of this class.  Researchers will use these data in phylogenetic and phylogenomic reconstructions and in comparative genomics studies that seek to elucidate the molecular bases governing spore dispersal, the production of yeast states, and the evolution of pathogenicity in Pucciniomycotina.

If you would like to use this genome in your research, please contact Dr. M. Catherine Aime ([email protected]) and Dr. Igor Grigoriev ([email protected]) for permission.
