In the “1KFG: Deep Sequencing of Ecologically-relevant Dikarya” project (CSP1974), we aim to sequence additional sampling of genomic diversity within keystone lineages of plant-interacting fungi and saprophytic fungi that are of special ecological importance for understanding terrestrial ecosystems. In addition, comparative genome analysis with saprotrophic, mycorrhizal and pathogenic fungi will provide new insights into the specific and conserved adaptations associated with each fungal lifestyle.

Cortinarius saniosus (Fr.) Fr.

Cortinarius saniosus is a widely distributed species of web-capped mushroom, reported from North America and Europe. It is characterized by its small fruitbodies with golden yellow veil and coarsely ornamented and broadly ellipsoid spores (Lindström et al. 2008). This species has a broad host range but is commonly found with hosts in the Salicaceae and represents a core member of the Populus ectomycorrhizal community (Karliński et al. 2013). In poplar clonal stands, C. saniosus was the most abundant species in polluted sites and was associated with low NO3-N and NH4-N concentration in soil (Karliński et al. 2013). This species was also found to be the dominant taxon in a dune environment in Norway dominated by species of Salix (Høiland and Botnen 2016). The genome of Cortinarius saniosus will be an important tool for understanding community assembly and function of the Populus root microbiome.

Researchers who wish to publish analyses using data from unpublished CSP genomes are respectfully required to contact the PI and JGI to avoid potential conflicts on data use and coordinate other publications with the CSP master paper(s).
