Fungi of the Fusarium oxysporum species complex (phylum Ascomycota, class Sordariomycetes, order Hypocreales) are ubiquitous soil and plant inhabiting microbes. As plant pathogens, Fusarium oxysporum strains can cause wilt and root rot diseases on over 120 plant species including many economically important plants such as cotton, banana, date palm and oil palm. Many strains of Fusarium oxysporum can infect plant roots without apparent effect or can even protect plants from subsequent infection. Fusarium oxysporum isolates also have been identified as human pathogens causing localized or disseminated infections that may become life-threatening in neutropenic individuals. Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. pisi is a fungal plant pathogen infecting peas, endemic to Moldova.
