Karstenula rhodostoma (Alb. & Schwein.) Speg. (Montagnulaceae) is characterised by immersed ascomata with wide ostiolar openings, narrowly cellular pseudoparaphyses, cylindrical asci with short pedicels, and reddish-brown, muriform ascospores. Karstenula has been placed Melanommataceae, but the combination of morphological characters and DNA sequences show it belongs to the Montagnulaceae. The species is saprotroph and grows on dry branches of alder buckthorn (Rhamnus frangula), but the exact decay mode is not known.
