Myriangiaceae sp. NC1570 was isolated in culture from a surface-sterilized, decomposing leaf of Quercus montana near Highlands, North Carolina (USA) as part of a study examining endophytic and saprotrophic fungal communities across North America (U’Ren & Arnold, 2016). We identified this isolate as an unidentified species of Myriangiaceae (Pezizomycotina, Dothideomycetes, Myriangiales) using ITS-partial LSU rDNA sequencing. Based on ITS rDNA sequence similarity, we determined that fungi with this genotype also occur as endophytic fungi in living photosynthetic tissues. As currently circumscribed, the family Myriangiaceae includes species that are saprobic, epiphytic, and parasitic on plant bark, leaves, and branches in primarily tropical and subtropical forests (Dissanayake et al., 2014). Comparative genomic analyses of NC1570 will provide an important framework for understanding the evolution of ecological modes and substrate use in this diverse clade.
