Rhizopus microsporus is a mold classified in the order Mucorales. It is a widely distributed soil fungus that can cause mucormycosis in immunocompromised humans and seedling blight in rice. R. microsporus is one of the very few fungi that harbor bacterial endosymbionts, beta-protoebacteria Burkholderia rhizoxinica and B. endofungorum. Bacterial endosymbionts provision the fungus with potent toxins and control its asexual reproduction. These attributes make R. microsporus into an attractive system to study fungal interactions with bacteria and to decipher reproductive biology of Mucoromycotina.
