The genome sequence and gene prediction of Rhizomucor pusillus CBS 18367 have not been determined by the Joint Genome Institute (JGI), but were downloaded from CSFG on July 31, 2022. In order to allow comparative analyses with other fungal genomes sequenced by the JGI, a copy of this genome is incorporated into Mycocosm. Please note that this copy of the genome is not automatically updated. JGI tools were used to automatically annotate predicted proteins.

Rhizomucor pusillus is a thermophilic fungus from the order Mucorales. Its growth optimum is 45 ºC (1) and it is one of the agents causing zygomycosis in immunocompromised patients (2). In general R. pusillus strains are unable to degrade complex cell wall polysaccharides, data supported by the lack of enzymes encoded in the genome. However, the identification of endoglucanase and xylanase activity in culture and enzymes encoded in the genome indicates that other strains of R. pusillus are able to degrade oligo- and polysaccharides to a certain extent (3,4). The genome of R. pusillus will provide insight into the evolution of themophily and pathogenicity in fungi.
