Saitoella complicata is important for comparative analysis for the pilot project to investigate poorly sampled lineages. This rare fungus occupies a unique position as one of a small group (Taphrinomycotina) of the most early diverging Ascomycota. Its distinct position (one of the nearest relatives of the model fungus Schizosaccharomyces pombe) and saprobic life style in a group containing plant and animal pathogens makes this species important for sequencing.
