Scheffersomyces illinoinensis was originally isolated from rotten wood (Carya illinoinensis) in Louisiana, USA. This species is remarkable for its ability to ferment xylose. Further study showed that it could ferment sugars and produce ethanol from hemicellulosic hydrolysate.
