Climacocystis borealis (Fr.) Kotl. & Pouzar is a member of the Polyporales. This saprotrophic bracket fungus produces typically a large number of annual fruiting bodies on conifer trunks near the base or on roots. The species is also a secondary pathogen causing root and butt-rot of living conifers. It is characterized by its creamish to straw-coloured watery basidiocarps, which are fan shape to broadly sessile. Microscopically characteristic are numerous ventricose cystidia and monomitic hyphal system with generative hyphae bearing clamps. Basidiospores are thin-walled, ellipsoid and hyaline, measuring 4.5-6.5 x 3-4.5 µm. Climacocystis borealis has a circumboreal distribution. In Europe it is found predominantly on Pinaceae like Abies, Larix, Picea and Pinus and noted also on Pseudotsuga and Tsuga in North America. A recent study has revealed that the genus Climacocystis consists of two species, the type species C. borealis and C. montana found only in high altitudes in the southwestern mountains of China.

Why sequence the genome?

The species has been sequenced in the framework of the 1KB Fungal Genomes Project, which aims in increasing knowledge in phylogenetic relationships and functional diversity among fungi. Our ongoing research based on a meta-population genomics study in Fennoscandia using RAD sequencing will be facilitated by complete reference genome of C. borealis. Besides, sequencing an additional Polyporales genome, Climacocystis borealis, creates new opportunities for improving the family-level classification in the Polyporales. The 1KFG project is a large collaborative effort aiming for master publication(s). Please do contact the PI associated with unpublished 1KFG genomes for permission prior to the use of any data in publications.
