The genome sequence of Ganoderma lucidum strain 260125-1 has not been determined by the Joint Genome Institute (JGI), but was downloaded from NCBI on August 18, 2020. In order to allow comparative analyses with other fungal genomes sequenced by the JGI, a copy of this genome is incorporated into Mycocosm. The JGI Fungal Annotation Pipeline was used to annotate this genome.
In the “1KFG: Deep Sequencing of Ecologically-relevant Dikarya” project (CSP1974), we aim to sequence additional sampling of genomic diversity within keystone lineages of plant-interacting fungi and saprophytic fungi that are of special ecological importance for understanding terrestrial ecosystems. In addition, comparative genome analysis with saprotrophic, mycorrhizal and pathogenic fungi will provide new insights into the specific and conserved adaptations associated with each fungal lifestyle.
The mushroom of immortality, Ganoderma lucidum (Curtis) P. Karst.
Ganoderma is a widely distributed genus of polypores (Polyporales, Agaricomycetes, Basidiomycota) with prominent basidiocarps, which grow either on the bark or roots of hardwood and softwood trees. The species are associated with a white rot and studies have shown that Ganoderma spp. can cause both types of white rot at the same substrate, which means either delignification of the wood without degradation of cellulose or simultaneous degradation of both lignin and cellulose.
Ganoderma lucidum (Curtis) P. Karst. sensu stricto has a limited distribution in Europe and parts of China, where it grows on the decaying hardwood trees, such as Quercus, Castanea, and Cyclobalanopsis. In China, G. lucidum is well-known for its bioactive compounds, such as triterpenoids and polysaccharides, used to cure diseases and stimulate immunity.
The monokaryotic G. lucidum strain 260125-1 has been sequenced and published by Chen et al. (2012). This strain derives from the strain CGMCC5.0026 belonging to the G. lucidum Asian group. As the gene annotation was not available at NCBI, we carried out a novel gene annotation by using the JGI Annotation pipeline. As the type species of Ganoderma, the genome sequence and gene annotation of G. lucidum will provide more information on the genomic diversity within the G. lucidum species complex. The genome of a North American isolate of Ganoderma sp. is available at the JGI MycoCosm database.
Researchers who wish to publish analyses using data from these genomes prior to their publication are respectfully required to contact the PIs and JGI to avoid potential conflicts on data use and coordinate other publications with the PIs.
