The teleomorph of Macroventuria anomochaeta van der Aa was isolated from decayed canvas in a desert in South Africa. It is placed in the Didymellaceae, which also includes Didymella and most Phoma anamorphs (asexual stage). The presence of setae on the pseudothecia distinguishes Macroventuria from Didymella. The asci of Macroventuria anomochaeta are not numerous, arranged parallel to each other, bitunicate and broadly rounded at the top. Each ascus produces eight two-celled ascospores. The ecology of Macroventuria anomochaeta is likely to be saprotrophic, but the underlying enzymatic mechanisms are unknown.
