Rutstroemia firma grows on wood and forms a small (usually less than 5cm) brown cup shaped cap with a small stem. The spores are white, cream or yellowish and the flesh is granular and brittle. It is usually seen in autumn to early winter.
Rutstroemia firma is classified in the Leotiomycetes (Pezizomycotina).
