Fungus-growing ants maintain an obligate mutualism with certain basidiomycete fungi. The ants use the fungi as food, and in turn, disperse fungal spores in manure. Trichosporon chiarellii is the name given to a novel yeast isolated from ant's nest (1). It was inferred to occupy a distinct phylogenetic position relative to known species of Trichosporon, thus may be of taxonomic interest. T. chiarellii was sequenced as part of the 1000 Fungal Genome Project
