The genus Trichomonascus is morphologically intermediate between two major groups of ascomycete fungi - the "higher ascomycetes" (euascomycetes) and the yeasts (hemiascomycetes).  On the basis of gene sequence analyses, Trichomonascus petasosporus was shown to be a yeast ans placed within the Saccharomycetales (budding yeasts).
The Trichomonascus petasosporus genome was sequenced as part of the 1000 Fungal Genomes Project.
