Yarrowia lipolytica PO1f (ATCC MYA-2613), derived from the French haploid strain W29 (ATCC 20460), is one of the most widely characterized strains of the Yarrowia clade.  This generally regarded-as-safe yeast is an emerging bioenergy microbe due to its ability to produce neutral lipids, organic acids (i.e., alpha-ketoglutarate, citrate) and proteins from various substrates (e.g. hydrocarbons, ethanol, acetate, C5/C6 sugars, cellobiose, etc.).  Additionally, Y. lipolytica exhibits exceptional tolerance to high salinity, organic solvents and broad pH (2-11) which are advantageous phenotypes for industrial biotransformation processes.
